Frequently Asked Questions

What type of therapy does activemind counseling offer?

ActiveMind Counseling offers a variety of evidence-based approaches that are uniquely tailored to your concerns and goals. While talk therapy is inevitably part of every approach, we augment with skills and action-oriented techniques you can apply immediately after each session. Many of our approaches are rooted in Cognitive Behavioral approaches.

Do you take insurance?

ActiveMind Counseling accepts a variety of insurance plans from Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Quest, and Carelon. We are also in the process of applying to take Illinois Medicaid and Medicare (we do not have an estimated online date as of 10/25/25). Because insurance can be so complicated, we can run an benefits check to see if we are in network for your specific plan and check to see if there will be any co-pays, co-insurance, or deductibles due. We want to make therapy accessible for as many people as possible.

i want to try exposure therapy but i’m afraid i will get scared. should i be afraid?

Many misconceptions of how Exposure Therapy is given are from the media, especially daytime talk and reality shows (remember Fear Factor). Thankfully, trained therapists work directly with you to have you face fearful stimuli in a very controlled and slow method. Think of it as climbing a long flight of stairs. One step at-a-time. We want to see you succeed. Ideally, it would be great if you are completely bored with an exposure before moving on to the next level. Between sessions, it is imperative that you practice exposures at home. This will cement your success and shorten the time you need in therapy.

does cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt) gaslight you?

On the surface, it can seem like CBT is trying to get you to lie to yourself but labeling thoughts are “irrational” or “unproductive” so they should be ignored. However, there is much more to this. Various Cognitive Behavioral approaches will look at thoughts and actions through various lenses. Sometimes these lenses are trauma-informed or look at it through the scope of systems/society and cultural identities. Everyone’s reality is different, and sometimes it’s important to address the route causes and core beliefs that produced these thoughts and actions. Above all, ActiveMind Counseling in Chicago takes a collaborative approach with every client to ensure you are getting the right treatment for your concern.
